I attended the annual So Creative Summit at the Centre for the Less Good Idea in Johannesburg, South Africa, in July 2022. It is a two-day event for creatives, artists, and cultures, presented by Business and Arts South Africa, Common Purpose South Africa, and Manchester International Festival, and supported by the British Council Creative Economy program.
The event was an inspiring experience for me as an artist and small business owner in South Africa. It allowed me to connect with other creatives and young people who are carving out a place for themselves in the creative sector. In this article, I want to share more about the event and what I learned during my time there.
At the So Creative Summit, Marco Morgan presented a compelling case study on the work being done by the V&A Waterfront to create shared value with artists in Cape Town's Waterfront. Thobile Chittenden, CEO of the Makers Valley Partnership, passionately explained why creativity is essential for sustainability, while Michelle Rocha provided valuable insights on accessing global opportunities. The summit also featured workshops on sustainable project design, creative resource audit, and entrepreneurial and business thinking, which were all highly informative and practical. From pitching my business idea, I learned crucial lessons, including the importance of starting with a hook, clearly explaining the problem, providing evidence, describing the solution, explaining the business model, and highlighting the team's qualifications. These lessons are invaluable to anyone looking to succeed in the creative sector and beyond.
